Introduction

John specialises in commercial, property and construction law. He acts for a wide variety of clients including banks, insurers, property developers, architects, surveyors, building contractors, commercial landlords, private and social housing landlords and utility providers. John has a busy court practice and appears in both the County Court and the High Court in a wide variety of trials, applications, interlocutory matters and appeals. John is regularly instructed to give written advice and draft pleadings as well as transactional documents.

John is currently instructed as junior counsel in Holyoake & Hotblack Holdings Ltd v Nicholas Candy & Others which is a £132 million claim relating to a property transaction concerning an alleged unlawful conspiracy. The seven-week trial of this matter (which has featured in The Lawyer's Top 20 Cases of 2017) is due to commence in the Chancery Division in February 2017.

John graduated from the University of Oxford with a Double First in Law where he received various university and college prizes. In particular, John was awarded the Gibbs Prize (Proxime Accessit) for the best university performance in Contract, Tort, Trusts and Land law.

John has delivered seminars in both the United Kingdom and Dubai on substantive and procedural matters of law, and is an active member of Hardwicke’s Junior to Junior seminar programme. John is a contributing author to Insurance Broking Practice and the Law (ed. CMS Cameron McKenna) and to Paul Reed QC’s forthcoming second edition of Construction All Risks Insurance (2016, Sweet & Maxwell). John has contributed articles to the Practical Law Construction Blog.

John is a keen footballer and is also a fan of Formula 1. John also mentors students through the Sutton Trust’s Pathways to Law Programme which is designed to inspire and support academically-able students in Year 12 and 13 from non-privileged backgrounds who are interested in a career in the law.
