Hardwicke International

For many years, barristers at Hardwicke have acted for clients world-wide.  We appear as advocates before Judges, Arbitrators and Mediators in international commercial litigation, arbitration and mediation, as well as undertaking advisory work in non-contentious matters.

Our barristers’ expertise ranges from company/commercial and insolvency, banking and finance, international trade and shipping, marine and non-marine insurance and reinsurance, construction, intellectual property, franchising, and information technology to personal injury, product and public liability and real property, as well as conflicts of laws and jurisdictional issues across all areas and references to the European Court of Justice.

Hardwicke’s barristers have experience of living and working in Europe, the Middle East (including the Gulf States), Africa, Asia and the US.  Our members also speak a range of languages, from French, German, Italian and Spanish to Hindu, Urdu, Japanese and Farsi.

Arbitration and Mediation are effective means of resolving international disputes. Many barristers at Hardwicke are well-versed in the conduct and resolution of disputes across a wide range of institutionally administered arbitral forums, including arbitrations conducted under the ICC, LCIA, LMAA, GAFTA, FOSFA, and WIPO as well as UNCITRAL, CIMAR and other ad hoc arbitrations.

A number of barristers at Hardwicke are qualified and experienced as Arbitrators and Mediators. Our arbitrators and mediators are also happy to provide combined mediation/early neutral evaluation in which, as well as facilitating discussions between the parties towards a mutually agreed settlement, the mediator/evaluator gives his or her specialist view of the strengths and weaknesses of a particular point or the case as a whole. We also offer mediation/arbitration (Med/Arb) and adjudication/mediation services where appropriate.

Hardwicke’s international practice is supported by Senior Practice Managers, Helen Burness (Commercial Division) and Vivian Frew (Insurance Division).  Both Helen and Vivian have extensive experience of working internationally in the legal sector.  Prior to joining Hardwicke, Helen led the international marketing and business development team at a leading global law firm.  Vivian is a UK solicitor and has also worked as a lawyer in both Hong Kong and Australia. She has substantial knowledge of Asia Pacific markets.

Instructing a UK barrister

Barristers can be instructed directly by foreign lawyers, including in-house counsel. This approach has numerous advantages:

  • Barristers are specialists in areas of law and in advocacy.
  • As self-employed practitioners, you can be assured of their objectivity and independence.
  • The Bar is primarily a referral profession; barristers work closely with foreign lawyers to improve efficiency and deliver an integrated legal service to clients.
  • As they are self employed with lower overheads, barristers charge lower fees than solicitors.

Hardwicke is uniquely positioned to offer foreign lawyers UK advice across a diverse range of practice areas in the areas of commercial, insurance, property and private client and public law. We are happy to accept instructs directly from overseas lawyers and are often also able to work directly for people or organisations based abroad who have legal issues with an English or international element.
